On March 20th, over 30 people gathered at MxD (1415 N Cherry Avenue) for the North Branch Works’ panel discussion, “Women Leaders of the North Branch.”
This event provided a platform for accomplished women from diverse fields to share their career experiences and insights. One of the strengths of our service area is our strong group of women-owned businesses.
Here are some key takeaways from the discussion:
Kimberly Moore (KDM Engineering, Calculated Genius, and 1308 Chicago) and Tammy Phillips (Jane Addams Resource Corporation) emphasized the value of mentorship.
Despite working in male-dominated fields, they both found supportive mentors early in their careers. Their message: Seek out like-minded individuals who will champion your goals.
Becca Tiwet (VoxSomnia) advised young women to project confidence while remaining authentic. Admitting when you don’t know something is okay—being a “sponge” and learning from those around you is essential. Authenticity sets you apart.
Angela Accurso (MxD) highlighted the importance of diverse teams. She encouraged reaching out to bring unique perspectives to the table.
When it comes to imposter syndrome, Phillips reminded us that even leaders experience it. Continuous learning and humility are key.
Tiwet and Accurso both had very personal experiences with imposter syndrome and said that it’s important to remember you are your harshest critic; surrounding yourself with confident and supportive people can help balance out self-doubt.
